IKEA has committed to moving its lighting offerings exclusively to LED by 2016. The furniture and lifestyle giant pledged the move at its inaugral Xmas trends preview in London. Very much promoting a sustainability message, the company added that it planned to sell LED lights some 20 per cent cheaper than rival high street suppliers. “We’re going through a massive change at the moment,” said Debora Wood, Decoration and Outdoor Living Sales Leader, IKEA UK

Amongst product launches announced at the event were decorative LED fairy lights that come with a detachable seasonal adornment (pictured above). “Fairy lights aren’t just for Christmas. Next year you’ll see different seasonal decorations you can clip on, so that the lights can be used at other times during the year, for example Easter,” Wood revealed.

IKEA cites the low running cost and low energy use of LED as prime reasons for the shift. "We can do so much more with LED,” the company told Inside ID, especially when it comes to implementing lighting within other products –“we can place LED lights within storage units and small places and not have any fear of them over-heating.” The company said one issue it was trying hard to address at the moment was the supply and cost of bayonet adaptors; all LED bulbs currently come with a European-style screw-thread. It did however concede that there was a still a big big consumer education job to done explaining the cost-saving benefits of LED lighting.

Also unveiled at the event was a wall-hanging print of a Christmas tree (pictured below) which could be unfurled in December and decorated with accessories, for those that simply don’t have room to erect a three dimensional version.
