In its new home of The Orangery of Kensington Palace, Decorex is the class act of the shows at this year’s London Design Festival. Representing the polished end of the design and decoration world, visionaries gather here to show off their latest ranges and products. The show itself is laid out in a standardised grid that brings with it simplicity as well as a potential monotony, which in the past has been avoided with feature areas. This year it was the balance and mixture of exhibitors that kept interest. Unlike most shows, Decorex mixes high-end traditional and opulent styles with the refined contemporary.

The OTT stand sticks in the memory, particular favourites being the exotic And So To Bed tent, and The Harlequin Winter House. Other favourites include Antiques by Design with its wacky but elegant mirror frames, lamps and furniture made from recycled objet d'art. David Hunt light fittings also stood out, with the latest pieces from Villiers and being profiled, flanked by sumptuous and stunning fabrics and papers to delight the decorator.

Changing the venue of a popular exhibition is always a risk, but it seems that Decorex International has pulled it off. Easier to get to than the Royal Hospital Chelsea, it hasn’t lost the buzz of the designer decorator crowd. Not edgy then, but an exhibition that focuses effectively on driving the business of selling high quality furniture fittings and fabrics.
