Open plan Edwardian kitchen renovation

Kitchen  Renovation

The brief for this kitchen, part of a larger renovation project in an Edwardian House in North London, was ostensibly simple - create a beautiful open plan family kitchen diner. But like all such simple requests, a good deal of careful planning was required to achieve the desired end result. Smartstyle Interiors, run by SBID and BIID Associate Phoebe Oldrey, worked with a structural engineer and building contractor to knock down the partition wall that was initially obstructing light into the space.

The Mondrian style cabinetry in the original kitchen was in poor condition and needed to be replaced. The water supply and fuse box were also impractically based in a separate small utility room, therefore they needed to be re-sited.

To deliver the multifunctional space the owners were looking for, Oldrey decided that careful zoning of the area was key, an open plan living space is fundamental to the way that Phoebe approaches interior design. Given that people can feel vulnerable in an uncurated open spaces, it was important to create a comfortable dining area that didn't feel as though occupants were sat in the kitchen. The secret here was to use different lighting techniques as a key factor in the zoning process, with a combination of pendant, feature wall and spotlights creating different levels of ambiance.

The final cost of the renovation was £40,000.
